Final Delivery – Vader Fleet Control (VFC)

Vader group has a storied past, and we are proud of our long history. Our history is part of our platform for future success and thus intimately linked to our present activities and future goals. We are under a constant developing to be ahead of the “light side”. We are now aiming for the clouds and developing a new systems based on SharePoint to control our entire fleet.

The fleet control system
The fleet control system keeps tracks on every ship in the fleet, provides a state of the art dashboard for our pilots and commander.

The Pilot Dashboard (TPD)
yammer1
The TPD is a one of a kind control system for our pilots, providing every pilot with a computer it only have to launch the app, and they are ready for battle.
TPD contains only the necessary to keep our pilot in the air. A map of the galaxy with real time view of fellow pilots position.
TPD has information about what ship you are flying. You don’t need any old-school turnkey to get this baby flying- just hit the green button and you are off! TPD also has a distress system that easily call for help with one button click.
Yammer is embedded so the pilots can communicate between each other and our bases.

Command center
commandcenterscreenshotblue
This is Vader’s tool for keeping up all the ships and their pilots. A list of all his pilot and a map of the galaxy with real time view of the pilots position and status. With a yammer feed, the commander is updated with all the communication between the pilots

Intelligent reporting
Dex Vader needs efficient and powerful reports to manage his growing empire. His new SharePoint solution needs to be able to give him the data he wants without needlessly navigating through a maze of files and metadata.

To make his job easier the Skill Wizards have created an AMAZING reporting dashboard that can be used to get a overview of the ships based on the lists for ships.
In addition the Skill Wizards have implemented a performance based KPI report which is available on the home dashboard for all troopers to view and update, which tells them who are most likely to be death gripped next. Initial reports has showed a significantly increased fear/respect for the great leader, combined with the new, fantastic user experience.

TPD Alert
In war, not only the commander needs to be updated. Vader has a whole command center department(CCD) who needs to be alert. They need something visual to know when something is going down. We created TPD Sphero Alert integration in already great solution :-) . It flashes red and notifys all the CCD.

Lots of value for (almost) no money. Now the whole CCD knows when something is going down.

Fleet commander app
From the TPD we have seen a demonstration of the Distress button and the messaging service for alerting the Fleet Commander. The Fleet Commander need immediate alert when a Ship sends Distress signal even when they are on the run. The Fleet Commander App is the solution. It notifies the commander when he is not around his Command center dashboard.
FC
He even get the notification on his Vader Watch

The Pilot sync
add_pilot
As pilots are short lived in the Star Fleet, the on boarding process for new pilots are important. The Pilot Synchronization workflow makes it easy for the commander to recruit new pilots.

Vader Gate
At Vader Enterprise we have a lot office of employees.. They do all kind of amazing stuff that’s really cool.

But we have a problem, sometimes they write, and send, things that are not within company policy.
We can under stand this, the office can be a big and confusing place, it’s not easy to know whats “ok” or “not ok”

Dex vader on the other hand is not that forgiving all the time…

And even tough office workers are expendable, it’s a real hassle to go through the hiring process, training process, etc, etc on a weekly basis…
So we have developed an office app that is in both our office employees interest and our own.

It warns the user if there is some phrase that would make the commander fire/kill his employee.

Vader Periodic Ship Inspection
At Vader we take the safety of our pilots very seriously. All the ships are required to go into inspection each year.
At the inspection we have a detailed list of checkpoints and each component is given a score based on its state.
Based on the number of faults we will get a binary inspection result: PASS or FAIL!

The StarFleet Commander Central Glossy Pixels

Do not judge SharePoint by the look said nobody ever!

The most important badges of the whole competition are of course the Glossy Pixels, so that’s what we’re aiming for.

Badge-GlossyPixels

If you manage to guide the user to get the right job done, without spending time teaching them how to use your solution, you are can save a huge amount of VTI.

The order from Vader Group was as clear as a star – Vader Group simply can’t effort wasting time teaching anyone how to use the solution. Like Coco Chanel said: Elegance is refusal – meaning that a luxurious simple design last foreveaaaaaaar!

So what we did was creating something familiar, combining it with that “Im on a spaceship” feeling to the design. A simple go-to UI, providing all the necessary features in a elegant way – which will give Vader Group a vital head start.

Good design is.…good. Brilliant design is priceless!

COMMANDER CENTRAL

commandcenterscreenshotblue

This is the Star Fleet Commander Central. This is Vaders tool for keeping up all the ships and their pilots. This Dashboard is mainly used at computers in a dark enviroment, and that’s why the theme has a dark background and lighter text.

LOGO

StarFleetCommanderBIGlogo StarFleetCommanderLogo

Our business idea has to do With ships and fleets; so who’s the biggest shipping Company? The evil MAERSK of course! So, of course Vaders StarFleet Commander Central had to have a big star for this logo. Maybe it makes you think about another star accosiated With Vader as well?

User Experience: The logo is important to create an immediate Connection to the Company for the users. It enhances trust for the content.

COLORS and FONTS

The list of all the ships is the only form of menu. This is what Controls the information on the Dashboard. You choose a ship and the map show the ships location, you’ll see the ship information and the Panic Messages for this ship. The ships list has a blue glow behind it to make it stand out and Draw attention. All the other elements With blue frame are Connected to the ship that you choose.headerfont

We use the standard Rockwell Light and Segoe UI font theme for this Dashboard. The font makes it feel a little geekier, and because Rockwell has serifs it a little easierto read the light content on a black background.

User Experience: Colors tell us witch content is Connected, and use of frames gathers information for us. This allows the eye to focus on some elements at the time and ignore others.

GUIDES

There are come guiding text across the Commander Central that will help enhance the user experience. The text for the Ships list is a good example. This is the first text on the top left corner of the page, and in vestern culture this is where most of us start looking for content if we’re lost on a webpage. The text show the user what icon to look for so that it’s easier for the user to spot the action-button in the list.

BUTTONS

shop

The shop buttons are using Font Awesome for it’s icons and has cool hover-effect. They are big so they are easy to hit from tablets and Phones. Cause the whole sits is responsive; did I mention that?

User experience: Big buttons are easy to hit using touch screens, but also helpful when using a mouse. Icons help us understand what the button does and separate button actions better then just text.

When you hit the “Buy” button you get a form where you enter information needed. The left menu is there so you don’t loose Connection to the rest of the Commander Central. The left menu has red details to stand out from the rest of the content.

The backgound image is from the bridge of a star ship and we stole it from this adress: http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120110005354/starwars/images/d/da/Executorbridge.jpg

ICONS

icons2

The icons used in Shop buttons and the Panic Message list are from Font Awesome. This is to get a consistent look and feel, the flexibility of the size and color and not having all the hazzle With lots of different icon images.

The background color and the icon is set by using JSLink listening to the Ship Status.

User Experience: Colors and icons alone are a great way to indicate different statuses. It’s better then text befause we need less time making correct Associations when presented With colors and icons then With text.

Bottom line is that this Star Fleet Commander Central doesn’t only look good, it’s useable as well.

Yamming it up in TPD

As we’ve mention before The Pilot Dashboard has been a huge success, providing immense value for Vader’s pilots. But some pilots have requested that we should implement some additional form of communication in our solution. Space is huge and it gets lonely. Out pilots want a solution for communication between them self and with our bases.

Therefor we have improved the solution by bringing yammer to the table surface!yammer1As you can see, we now provide an you standard, run of the mill, embedded yammer feed. This provides excellent user value through very little work. The pilots can communicate between the self and our bases.

View from our back-office system at the bases:yammer2

But we didn’t stop there. We also added – even more value – to our excising Pilot Distress System by providing automatic posting to yammer when a distress signal is triggered.yammer3

Take a look at the demonstration below:

Vader Periodic Ship Inspection (VPSC)

At Vader we take the safety of our pilots very seriously. All the ships are required to go into inspection each year.

At the inspection we have a detailed list of checkpoints and each component is given a score based on its state. (0: no faults, 1: a bit faulty, 2: very faulty, 3: down right dangerous).

Based on the number of faults we vi get a binary inspection result: PASS or FAIL!

Or trusty mechanic used do these inspection on papers which was prone to errors. Paper got dirty, paper went missing, and sometimes he event got the calculations wrong.

There for we have implemented the Vader Periodic Ship Inspection (VPSC) utilizing Access Services. Levering the existing ship list we added a ship inspection table which keeps track on all inspections.

Putting VPSC in the cloud has been a real game changer as now every one has access (get it?) to vital information about the ships.

VPSC Ships are listed on the left based on when next inspection is coming up. On the right we can see all the previous inspection, their results and start a new inspection.

VPSC2

On the Inspection screen we have all the checkpoints, and automagical calculation of the fault codes and result!

Head2Head – Amazing Reporting in Power BI

badgesPerYearTeamDevelopment

Amazing reports based on participation data from the ASPC webservices with scheduled refresh in PowerBI. Unfortunately, the all-powerful Emperors needs to import this data into a SharePoint list, and wants to display this data in a SharePoint Site. To solve this the Skill Wizards used their amazing SharePoint skills to get the participant data from the API, join into into one large, table, and automatically populate a SharePoint list with the content.

To provide the Emperors with stunningly beautiful reports we made a PowerPivot-report which collects the data from the SharePoint oData-feed, so it can be refreshed inside SharePoint Online _and_ through the Excel-client.

ParticipantListDataConnector

It has a PowerPivot table displaying the team names as rows, sorted uniquely by team ID to compensate for teams who keep changing names, with a column for each year counting the number of badges won.

TeamAwardsTable

To stick with our idea of beautiful presentations we have also created a PowerPivot graph which shows the number of badges won for each year, categorized by Teams in a colorful way.

TeamAwardsChart

The Skill Wizards are satisfied with their BI magic, and are glad to be able to also present the emperors with a more modern, Power BI-based reports which are available for future use, as well as a huge list in SharePoint which can be used for “retro”-stuff

The Pilot Synchronization Workflow

As pilots are short lived in the Star Fleet, the onboarding proccess for new pilots are important

It is created a workflow that queries the Star Wars API (http://swapi.co/api/people/), and adds a users to Azure AD from the Star Wars universe.

Plumsail Workflow Action Pack is used (http://plumsail.com/workflow-actions-pack/), here you got a bunch of workflow actions that for instance can be used for adding users to Azure AD

workflow_skillwizards

This is a really simple way to create a self service portal in Office 365. Here we have shown creating a user, but Plumsail have a lot ow Workflow steps for adding Users to groups, creating groups, updating user properties etc.

Intelligent reporting and amazing business value

Dex Vader needs efficient and powerful reports to manage his growing empire. His new SharePoint solution needs to be able to give him the data he wants without needlessly navigating through a maze of files and metadata.

One of his biggest concerns are bad pilots, which cause so much damage and are horribly bad at their job. To make his job easier the Skill Wizards have created an AMAZING reporting dashboard that can be used to get a overview of the ships based on the content types found in the lookup lists for ships, users and ship templates. Data hosted in the PowerBI portal makes this solution both great to use as well as making the Empire ready for the next generation of BI solutions.

BIDashboard

In addition the Skill Wizards have implemented a performance based KPI report which is available on the home dashboard for all troopers to view and update, which tells them who are most likely to be death gripped next. Initial reports has showed a significantly increased fear/respect for the great leader, combined with the new, fantastic user experience.

Save site as template hack

One of the first tricks a SharePoint Consultant learns is to modify the SharePoint URLs. _layouts/15/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx and  _layouts/15/AreaNavigationSettings.aspx are examples on popular URLs to gain access to SharePoint standard/publishing functionality on team sites, while _layouts/15/savetmpl.aspx is a hacky and unsupported way for saving a publishing site as a template.

The savetmpl.aspx “hack” has been around for years, but recently Micorosoft have stopped this…or have they?

s1

The new trick is to modify a Site property “SaveSiteAsTemplateEnabled”, and set this to “true”.

This can be done in a variety of ways, the easyest may be SharePoint Designer:
